On May 9, BayBrazil & the Silicon Valley Bank will host the founders of Peixe Urbano, the e-shopping powerhouse and most disruptive force in the Brazilian e-commerce!

These are some of the words used to describe Brazilians who ventured into entrepreneurship.
According to the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor, Brazil is one of the most entrepreneurial countries in the world.
Brazilians have created companies spanning multiple sectors such as energy, finance, agribusiness and information technology. In recent years, entrepreneurship clusters and business incubators have been booming across the country to support an increasing number of startups right up in the radar of local and international VCs and angel investors.

Some analysts say that the current Brazilian startup boom was kicked-off by Peixe Urbano, the largest Brazilian online daily-deal provider. Launched at the end of 2009, the company is growing rapidly, operating in Brazil, Argentina, Mexico and Chile with over 20 million registered users. Investors in Peixe Urbano include Tiger Global Management, VC firms General Atlantic, Benchmark Capital, and, more recently, Morgan Stanley and T. Rowe Price.

Alex Tabor, Co-Founder and CTO of Peixe Urbano

A Computer Science graduate from the University of Southern California, Alex Tabor is a specialist in software development. He worked as Software Architect for Power.com, a social media integrator, before launching Peixe Urbano, the first and largest Latin American local commerce website, with co-founders Julio Vasconcellos and Emerson Andrade. Tabor is half-Brazilian, half-American and has lived in several different countries around the world. His passion for information technology has been apparent since childhood, as he launched India’s first online graphic community, a BBS (Bulletin Board System), at age 13.

With a Bachelor of Science in Finance and Marketing from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and an MBA from Stanford University, Julio Vasconcellos returned to Brazil in early 2010 to found Peixe Urbano, company that introduced the daily deal concept in Latin America and was recently awarded “Best International Startup of 2011” by The Crunchies Awards. Before that, he participated in the development of different startups and Internet companies in Silicon Valley, having worked as Director of Business Development for Experience Project, the largest anonymous online community through which users can share life experiences, and later as the first Country Growth Manager for Facebook in Brazil. He started his career at the consulting company Monitor, where he became the firm’s youngest manager, at age 22. Truly passionate about entrepreneurship, Vasconcellos has collaborated with a number of blogs, podcasts and publications, as well as administered courses at Stanford University.

Vicente is an experienced Internet professional, with a passion for social media and a strong belief in the potential of emerging countries such as his native Brazil. He currently works as Director of Engineering at LinkedIn, focusing on building a safe, scalable and engaging professional network site. Prior to joining LinkedIn, Vicente worked for VeriSign (now Symantec) for 8 years in product and international teams. He started his career as a founding employee of CertiSign which became one of the first successful internet startups in Brazil. He has a Computer Engineering degree from PUC-Rio and currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his family.
